Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013

Organized by Fairchild Television benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant Gala Dinner 2013 was concluded at Vancouver Convention Centre on December 12th 2013. The theme this year is ‘City of illuminations, Beauty beyond imagination’ in celebration of the honor that the past 6 winners of both Miss Chinese Vancouver and Miss Chinese International have brought to the city of Vancouver. The Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant stage has provided a platform for countless young girls to pursue their dreams in the performing arts. For the past three months, the finalists have been transformed into glamorous gems that shone on stage as they competed for the Miss Chinese Vancouver title.

With the main theme of the evening being glamor and beauty, each segment was filled with excitement and enlightenment. The MC’s of the evening included the beautiful and renowned Hong Kong media personality Anna Yau, her long-time good friend from Fairchild Ricky Cheung, and quick-witted Talentvision program host Fred Liu. In light of Fairchild Television’s 20th anniversary, the Pageant especially featured 20 past Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant title winners in the opening segment, each passing on the sparkling tiara to continue the Miss Chinese Vancouver legacy. The last to make an appearance was, of course, none other than last year’s Miss Chinese Vancouver and Miss International 2013, Gloria Tang. Gloria recently finished filming her first TVB television drama in Hong Kong and rushed home to Vancouver to attend the event with an exciting performance as a highlight to the show. Gloria’s dance served as the perfect introduction to the finalists who were dressed in elegant gowns custom designed by local designers to reflect each girl’s personality. During the spectacular dance of fashion and lights, they also cast votes for Miss Friendship.

Accompanied by this year’s Super 10 winner Theresa, and Super 10 Most Charismatic Award winner Saiko’s mesmerizing oldies, the ten contestants took a trip back in time to a bright and colorful night in Shanghai. They performed a refreshing and unique umbrella dance in handsome black and white suits against the bright backdrop of Shanghai’s WongPo beach. The striking background along with the past three months of demanding training resulted in a wondrous and entertaining Broadway musical dance number.

Four handsome MC’s, including fashion expert Brian Chan, food blogger Bosco Mo, musician Charlie Lui, and master chef Alex Mok went on a romantic date with the 10 contestants, chatting about modern living under the dazzling crystal lighting.

The contestants then showcased a wide range of unique talents : #1, Jamie Gao, who has undergone four years of formal training, act ed out a monolog from the play ‘Women at 40 "to express a mother’s mourning for her deceased son. Her emotional performance brought tears to many of the audience’s eyes, #2, Tracy So’s Hip Hop dance incorporated quick-change magic, surprising all attending guests, #3, Jessica Dai performed a lively and energetic cheerleading dance, #4, Hebe Yue showed off her stunning figure with a passionate Latin Dance. #5, Cindy Zhong’s cute and lively Christmas angel dance captured the audience’s hearts, #6, Abigail Liu brought forth a traditional Chinese dance with a touch of JiangNan culture, #7, Michelle Shek, who is certified with performer’s level in piano, played an intricate musical piece from the popular movie ‘Secret”, #8, Jennifer Lee, with a dance training since three years old, wowed the guests with her flexibility in a Chinese DunHuang dance, #9 Elma Wang’s Bollywood scarf dance gave the audience a taste of a different culture, #10, Brenda Cheng's performance was filled with passion and rhythm as she drummed to the popular song Gangnam Style.

Entering the highly anticipated segment of the evening, the finalists emerged in sensual swimwear and were challenged by the judges who picked two contestants on the spot to answer the same question, testing their eloquence and ability to react to impromptu problems. The judging panel comprised five accomplished professionals including acclaimed writer, Dr. Anita Leung, former head coach of China’s national diving team, Liang Boxi, Miss Chinese Vancouver 2008 and 2nd runner up of Miss Chinese International 2009, Cici Chen, environmentalist and architect David Wong, and internationally celebrated ballet coach Li Yaming. All the topics of the questions that the contestants were asked were related to the fields in which the judging panel worked, like literature, sports, charity works, environmental sustainability, and arts. Lastly, the contestants dressed in traditional yet fashionable and modern Chinese gown (cheongsam), each shining like beautiful pearls filled with individuality.

With one highlight following after another came the long-awaited performance of the special guest from Hong Kong, singer-songwriter, Justin Lo who performed his passionate dance song ‘Volar” plus a few other hits like ‘Hard Life’ and ‘KTV of Men’. Justin expressed his belief that good music will bring positive energy, and that he hoped that his songs would give encouragements to the contestants, who were very nervous in backstage at that point. Having recently returned to the Hong Kong music industry, Justin concluded his performance with a new Mandarin number ‘Really Want to Say Goodbye’, moving the audience with his emotional music.

Lastly, after much discussions, the judging panel decided on the results as follows: Champion, Wiston Miss Friendship , Senniyo Beauty Best Posture Award & Canada Reishi Miss Photogenic : #5 Cindy Zhong 1st Runner up, Lugaro Jewellers Dazzling Flair Award & Beauty Court Sparkling New Star Award : : #8 Jennifer Lee 2nd Runner up & McCormick Most Charming Smile Award : 1 Jamie Gao

Miss Chinese Vancouver 2013, Cindy Zhong will be representing Vancouver to compete in Miss Chinese International Pageant 2014 along her counterparts from around the world.

年度盛事「溫哥華華裔小姐競選2013」舉行在即，適逢新時代電視邁向光輝20年，大會傾力打造一場閃亮全城的華麗騷，專誠邀請由香港遠道而來的特別嘉賓側田及丘凱敏，令總決賽耀眼生輝。兩位紅星剛出席記者會，率先與温哥華的粉絲會面。

記者會司儀盧玉鳳介紹側田及丘凱敏登場，隨即引起全場哄動，他倆分别在佈景片上的巨型照片簽名。來自本市的丘凱敏表示很高興回到温哥華，尤其在漫天飄雪下與久違的老朋友重逢，特別温馨，而她亦非常期待與識於微時的張文謙攜手合作，擔任總決賽司儀，相信定會駕輕就熟默契十足。大騷經驗豐富的Anna曾主持「萬千星輝賀台慶」、「香港電影金像獎頒獎禮」及「十大中文金曲頒獎禮」等，近年升格為「時尚女皇」，主理的潮流品味電視節目「女皇駕到」大受歡迎，更出書大談扮靚心得。充滿智慧美的Anna，究竟以那個時尚打扮登場，與10位佳麗互相輝影，總決賽自有分曉。而側田過往曾到訪温哥華，但參與本地選美盛事則是首趟，他感謝新時代電視的邀請，有幸與10位美女同台演出。內斂靦覥的側田，擅於用音符表達情感，他精通樂器，熱衷作曲及唱片製作，貫徹實力唱作人的身份，側田相信好音樂能帶來正能量，所以決賽當晚預備了自己的大熱歌曲為眾佳麗打氣。今年側田強勢再戰香港樂壇，於5月更重踏紅館舉行演唱會，發行新專輯好評如潮，他當然會為大家送上新曲以饗本地樂迷，用好歌聲動温哥華。

「温哥華華裔小姐競選2013」以「城市之光 - 跨越美麗國度」作為大會主題, 突顯新時代電視創下6位同時贏得「温哥華華裔小姐」與「國際中華小姐」雙冠軍佳麗的輝煌成績，締造國際選美佳話，為温哥華爭光。華姐競選更成就萬千少女夢想，使她們跨越選美平台，踏上璀燦星光路。為延續美麗傳奇，今年的十位佳麗近日積極備戰，逐步朝12月12日總決賽進發，期望再度代表温哥華發熱發亮。

十位準華姐於今日記者會正式亮相，並在司儀楊飛及陳本岡介紹下首晤新聞界。經大會細意雕鑿，佳麗蛻變成顆顆耀眼瑰寶，艷光四射，散發時尚光彩，她們並配合大會主題，以「城市」及「亮光之物」來作自我介紹，別具心思。1號高嘉馨曾接受4年專業的演藝訓練，並擁有幕前經驗；2號蘇嘉寶是土生土長的健康美少女，充滿陽光氣息；外形纖巧的3號戴曉欣，面試時的舞蹈加魔術才藝表演令人眼前一亮；4號岳凌羽正於大學修讀視覺藝術，舉手投足温文儒雅；人如其名的5號鍾熠，閃俏亮麗；6號劉一霏擁有高挑身型，極具模特兒風範；秀外慧中的7號石汶惠，天賦音樂才華；8號李佳美是2006年Sunshine Nation冠軍，舞藝超群；散發古典美的9號王夢熙，卻鍾情熱情奔放的寶萊塢舞；笑容甜美的10號鄭施蔚，樂觀積極陪伴患有自閉症的弟弟一起成長。

適逢新時代電視邁向光輝二十年，大會特别走訪四位曾成就這個華麗傳奇的亮眼人物，包括第一屆儀態導師譚錦芳小姐、 2001年至2004年形象總監 Ms. Irene Lau-Godfrey、歷屆佈景設計師駱敬才先生及曾任多屆華姐司儀及評判的李婉華小姐，穿梭時光隧道，細味那些年的難忘片段。

大會精心打造一場華麗盛宴閃耀這歷史性時刻，去年的「溫哥華華裔小姐」暨「2013年國際中華小姐」鄧佩儀，雖然己經簽約TVB並忙於拍攝首套電視劇，但心繫娘家的Gloria, 將回歸温哥華為新一屆華姐冠軍加冕外，更秘密練兵，於總決賽當晚為大家帶來精彩的表演。同樣來自本市的靚女主持丘凱敏，將出任總決賽司儀。充滿智慧美的Anna，口齒伶俐，身兼電台、電視節目主持人與作家多職。她縱橫視播界大騷經驗豐富，曾主持「萬千星輝賀台慶」、「香港先生選舉」、「香港電影金像獎頒獎禮」及「十大中文金曲頒獎禮」等，近年丘凱敏升格為「時尚女皇」，為 now TV主持的潮流品味節目「女皇駕到」大受歡迎， 已添食至第3輯，更出書大談扮靚心得。丘凱敏將與老朋友兼舊拍檔張文謙擔任總決賽司儀，駕輕就熟，再加上司儀新星劉津，組成鐵三角為比賽錦上添花。當然，特別表演嘉賓側田的好歌演出叫人期待，充滿音樂細胞的側田，精通樂器，熱衷作曲及唱片製作，憑藉為古巨基編寫《大雄》和《傷追人》兩首大熱歌曲，由幕後走到幕前。主打歌「好人」、「男人KTV」和「命硬」大獲好評，他甫出道即橫掃香港樂壇所有新人男歌手獎，並在短短一年時間，躍升至「最佳男歌手」三甲之一。專注發展歌唱事業外，側田從不間斷為圈中歌手作曲，並順利奪得多個唱作人獎，邁向事業另一個高峰。早前側田發表新作，再戰香港樂壇，今年5月更重踏紅館舉行演唱會，大受好評。才華洋溢的側田，於華姐總決賽定必用好歌以饗温哥華粉絲，為大家帶來一個極盡娛樂視聽之夜。

今年大會誠邀五位城中名人擔任評判，包括享譽華文世界著名女作家梁鳳儀博士、中國前國家跳水隊總教練梁伯熙先生、 2008年「溫哥華華裔小姐」暨2009年國際中華小姐季軍陳娜良子小姐、傑出環保建築師黄海天先生及國際著名芭蕾舞蹈家李亞明先生，評審團將肩負挑選華姐屬誰的重任。

記者會的亮燈儀式由籌委會主席陳國雄主持，與十位佳麗一同見証華姐的瑰麗光芒，照耀温哥華。今年已是連續第七年，新時代電視慷慨捐出「溫哥華華裔小姐競選2013」總決賽製作，為加拿大防癌協會籌款，回饋社會。

新時代電視二十週年台慶延續無限精彩，「溫哥華華裔小姐競選」壓軸隆重登場。在過去的歲月裡，「溫哥華華裔小姐競選」成就萬千少女夢想，给予無數明日之星發光發熱的平台，新時代電視先後孕育6位同時贏得「溫哥華華裔小姐」與「國際中華小姐」雙冠軍的佳麗，包括：廖碧兒、周雪、鍾嘉欣、李亞男、岑麗香及應屆國際中華小姐鄧佩儀，成為國際選美界的佳話 , 其中廖碧兒、鍾嘉欣、李亞男、岑麗香及鄧佩儀憑著冠冕光環，順利晉身娛樂圈。嘉欣BB已貴為視壇一姐，歌唱發展相當火红，更剛於8月舉行個唱; 而「香香公主」岑麗香一出道即備受注目，榮登人氣女神;早前回到香港發展的鄧佩儀，亦簽约TVB，蓄勢待發正式踏上星途。此外，不少經歷「溫哥華華裔小姐競選」培訓的佳麗，好好利用此優勢，回到香港參選「香港小姐」，闖出一片天空，包括2005年華姐張嘉兒及2009年「溫哥華華裔小姐」亞軍張名雅，先後摘下2007年及2012年的香港小姐冠軍名銜。

Guest performers, Justin Lo and Anna Yau, Press Conference

The much anticipated annual extravaganza “Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013” is just around the corner. Fairchild Television held a press conference to welcome guest performers from Hong Kong, Justin Lo and Anna Yau who have just landed in Vancouver to meet with their fans.

When the MC of the press conference, Mary Lo, introduced the two artistes, the entire audience roused with excitement as the pair each autographed their own photo in the giant photo board behind them. Anna, who is originally from Vancouver, was thrilled to return for a long awaited reunion with old friends, in particular, Ricky Cheung, whom she will be partnering with as MC for the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013. Anna has rich experience in hosting variety shows such as the TVB Anniversary Gala, Hong Kong Film Awards, and Top Ten Chinese Golden Song Awards. This year, Anna has exploded in popularity, as she hosts the fashion and popular culture television program, The Queen is Coming, and has subsequently released two books to share her styling tips. Justin Lo has also visited Vancouver in the past, but this will be his first time performing at our Pageant. He thanked Fairchild Television for providing him with the opportunity to work with the 10 celestial beauties. Justin, who usually has a shy personality, wishes to express deep emotions through his songs. He is very talented in music and passionate in writing and composing, striving to create a name for himself as a singer-songwriter. Justin believes that good music will bring positive energy to the audience. Hence, he has prepared some of his most popular numbers for the evening to show support for the 10 contestants and touch the hearts of all the fans in Vancouver with his beautiful voice. This year, Justin has made a comeback to the Hong Kong music industry as he released a new album and held a sold out concert in the Hong Kong Coliseum this past May.

During the press conference, the two artistes brought some gifts all the way from Hong Kong for their lucky fans. Justin presented three excited fans with his autographed album and Anna gave another three lucky winners her autographed book. Finally, President of Fairchild Media Group, Mr. Joe Chan, presented a souvenir for the two artistes as a token of appreciation for their support. Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013 Press Conference

“City of Illuminations. Beauty beyond Imagination” is the theme of Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013, symbolizing the pride and legacy that the 6 past winners of both Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant and Miss Chinese International Pageant have brought to our city. For the past 19 years, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant has been nurturing and fulfilling dreams of countless young individuals, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and shine onstage. This year is no exception. The ten contestants have been hard at work preparing for the final show, taking place on December 12, 2013.

At today’s press conference, the ten beauties were officially introduced to the public and media for the first time by MC’s Gerald Yang and Brian Chan. In line with the theme “City” and “Illuminations”, each contestant presented to the audience an object with this particular theme to represent themselves onstage. No. 1 Jamie Gao has had four years of training in the performing arts with previous acting experiences. No. 2 Tracy So is a bright and lively young lady who was born and raised in Canada. Dainty and delicate-looking, No. 3 Jessica Dai wowed everyone at the audition with her performance of dance mixed with magic. A student of visual arts, No.4 Hebe Yue’s skilled hands show off her elegance and gracefulness. No.5 Cindy Zhong emanates beauty and poise. Slender and charming, No.6 Abigail Liu has the assets of a model. No. 7 Michelle Shek is a multi-talent in a number of musical instruments. No. 8 Jennifer Lee was the winner of Sunshine Nation 2006. Embodied with classical beauty, No. 9 Elma Wang has a passion for Bollywood dance, and No.10 Brenda Cheng has optimistically supported her autistic younger brother with a bright smile.

In light of Fairchild Television’s 20th anniversary, the Committee has specially invited four guests who have had great contributions to Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant in the past, including the very first modeling instructor, Ms. Karin Tham, Image Director from 2001-2004, Ms. Irene Lau-Godfrey, past set designer, Mr. Lok King-Choi, and judge and MC for the past Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageants, Ms. Anita Lee.

With the tremendous efforts from the Fairchild team for the past few months, the Final will certainly be an unforgettable and entertaining evening. Miss Chinese Vancouver 2012, and Miss Chinese International 2013 Gloria Tang, will be making a special visit back to Vancouver to attend the Pageant in the middle of her busy drama filming schedule. Gloria will not only be crowning her successor, but has also been practicing a unique performance for the Final. Renowned media personality in Hong Kong Anna Yau, will partner with her long time friend from Fairchild Ricky Cheung and Fred Liu as the MC. Anna is competent in hosting special events, television and radio shows and gifted in writing and knowledgeable in beauty as well. Apart from hosting many high-profile variety shows such as the TVB Anniversary Gala, Mr. Hong Kong Pageant, Hong Kong Film Awards, and Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Awards, Anna has exploded in popularity this year with her participation at the fashion and popular culture television program “The Queen is Coming”. The show was so well received that it has gone on to its third season with Anna earning the title as “Fashion Queen”.

Another highlight and the most anticipated performance of the evening is the appearance of special guest performer singer-song-writer Justin Lo. Born with a mesmerizing voice, Justin also possesses talents in music composition and production. Justin has written hit songs Dai Hung and Right Person for celebrated Asian artiste Leo Ku. Moving from behind the scene to onstage, Justin’s title songs Good Person, KTV of Men, and Hard Life, have received overwhelming reviews. In the year of his debut, Justin swept up music charts and won all of the New Singer Awards, and managed to capture the title of Best Male Singer in the following year. Apart from focusing on his career as a singer, Justin has not ceased to compose and produce music for others as well, even winning an award for music composition. Early this year, Justin released his newest work and held a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in May. With the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant Final coming up, Justin is sure to bring an amazing performance to fans in Vancouver.

Chair of the Pageant Organizing Committee Mr. Joe Chan, along with the ten contestants, conducted the lighting ceremony of Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013. This year marks the seventh consecutive year that Fairchild Television has generously donated the Final show of Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant to the Canadian Cancer Society as the entertainment for its annual fundraising gala dinner.

Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013 will take place on December 12th at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The Legacy Continues

Fairchild Television’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations have come to a concluding stage with the launch of Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013. In past years, the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant stage has opened up new horizons for many talented girls to pursue their dreams. In total, Fairchild Television has nurtured 6 Champions of both Miss Chinese Vancouver and Miss Chinese International Pageants including Bernice Liu, Shirley Zhou, Linda Chung, Leanne Li, Eliza Sam and most recently, Gloria Tang. Among these gifted individuals, Bernice Liu, Linda Chung, Leanne Li, Eliza Sam, and Gloria Tang have made remarkable debuts at different times into the entertainment industry in Asia. Linda Chung has become the Ace of showbiz not only in acting, but also as an extraordinary singing artiste. She just held her first full-housed solo concerts a few months ago in Hong Kong with overwhelming reviews from the media and fans. Eliza Sam was instantly met with explosive popularity the minute she launched her career as a HK-TVB artiste. Gloria Tang, who returned to Hong Kong earlier this year, has also signed a management contract with TVB, and is steadily elevating herself to stardom. Many other Miss Chinese Vancouver finalists have also taken advantage of the knowledge and skills obtained from the Pageant and subsequently returned to Hong Kong to participate in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant. A lot of them have gone on to accomplishing outstanding results. Among these are Miss Chinese Vancouver 2005 finalist Kayi Cheung and Miss Chinese Vancouver 2009 1st runner up, Carat Cheung who captured the title of Miss Hong Kong 2007 and Miss Hong Kong 2012 respectively.

20 Shining Stars

To mark Fairchild Television’s 20th anniversary, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2013 will feature 20 past title winners who have set perfect examples for this year’s contestants. Five of these stunning individuals, including Natalie Au (1998), Kayi Cheung (2005), Cici Chen (2008), Erica Chui (2011) and Veronica Shiu (2012), will be interviewed in Leisure Talk to share their unforgettable life changing experiences at the Pageant. It has been 15 years since Natalie Au was crowned 1st Runner up of Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 1998. But she still vividly remembers every detail of the competition as if it just happened yesterday. After the Pageant, Natalie became the host of the very popular magazine program “What’s On” and had since hosted local English Television shows, made appearances in television dramas, and even taken on a role in the movie ‘Life is a Miracle’ made in Vancouver by a production crew from Hong Kong. Although she has now stepped out of the entertainment industry to focus on her family and her work in the education field, Natalie still looks back and reminisces her memorable years in the spotlight. Kayi Cheung is not only active in hosting television programs and MC-ing variety shows in Hong Kong but has also established a foreign language academy, thus breaking the stereotype and showcasing both beauty and brains. Cici Chen has become a successful entrepreneur in China after competing and winning in both the Vancouver and International Pageants, but agrees that assuming the duties of Miss Chinese Vancouver was one of the most valuable and challenging experiences in her life. Erica Chui and Gloria Tang both became Ambassadors of Hope for Canadian Cancer Society working hard to give back to society with loving and caring hearts and are now ready to embrace bright futures in their acting careers.
